Surely, We Can Do Better

We are told almost daily that our nation is divided. Rarely are we also told it always has been. From the beginning, Americans disagreed over loyalty to Britain, slavery, and the sovereignty of states. Protestants seemed to agree on nothing other than that they opposed Catholics. For reasons I will never grasp, the anger of our Civil war seems to have been redirected against blacks.

Fishing group led by ‘Codfather’ shut down by government

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — The federal government says a group of commercial fishing operations dominated by a magnate known as “The Codfather” will be shut down for the rest of the season.

Carlos Rafael pleaded guilty to smuggling money to Portugal and evading fishing quotas. In September, he was sentenced to nearly four years in prison.

A 9-year-old Maine boy with cancer has died a week after his wish for a Christmas celebration was fulfilled.

Jacob Thompson’s family announced on social media that he died Sunday at Maine Medical Center in Portland. His family thanked those who sent Christmas cards and prayers, saying they brought joy and encouragement to the boy and his family.

Police: Cash, tequila stolen from Sea Dog

TOPSHAM — Topsham police are investigating a burglary reported Monday morning at Sea Dog Brewing Co. in Topsham.

Topsham Police Lt. Fred Dunn said Sea Dog staff discovered the burglary at around 8:30 a.m. Monday, as they were getting ready to open. Police are still working to determine how the person got into the restaurant.

Police issue a warning about spoiled turkeys

FALMOUTH (AP) — The police department in Falmouth, Maine, is warning residents to steer clear of black market Butterballs.

The police department reports a Hannaford supermarket had to discard frozen turkeys that thawed out because of a mechanical failure.

Police say the problem is that someone collected them from a trash bin with the idea of redistributing them.
