Southgate Loss Hopefully Not Forever

Last Wednesday evening, relaxing on my porch and enjoying classical music on noise canceling headphones, I was completely unaware that a few blocks away fire fighters from several towns were battling flames engulfing the Southgate. Despite their efforts, that always-been-there landmark was totally destroyed.

New federal prosecutor confirmed

PORTLAND (AP) — The U.S. Senate has unanimously confirmed Halsey Frank to be the next U.S. attorney for Maine.

Frank currently serves as an assistant U.S. attorney for Maine and is a career prosecutor who’s worked for the Department of Justice in both Maine and Washington, D.C.

Woman killed in ATV crash near Eustis

COPLIN PLANTATION (AP) — Maine game wardens say a woman was killed when she crashed her all-terrain vehicle in Coplin Plantation, near the town of Eustis.

Wardens say 25-year-old Krystle Lincoln, of Eustis, died Tuesday night after the ATV rolled on top of her. Her body was found by friends when she didn’t return.

Employers receive $21 million workers compensation refund

PORTLAND (AP) — Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company has returned $21 million to Maine employers insured by the workers compensation provider.

About 18,000 employers in the state will see insurance returns from the Portlandbased insurer. MEMIC president Michael Bourque attributes the lower costs to better workplace safety. Bourque says fewer injuries keep costs down.

Eichman trial set for January

Charged with 20 counts of alleged sex crimes against children, youth theater group founder Henry Eichman will face a jury in January.

Eichman, 57, of Brunswick, has two cases pending — one in Cumberland County Superior Court and one in Sagadahoc County. Those cases will be combined and tried together, as requested by defense attorney Annie Stevens.

Bag ban moves forward in Bath

The Bath City Council unanimously approved bans on single-use plastic bags and the use of polystyrene foam containers for prepared foods at its regular meeting on Wednesday.
