Legislature votes to make municipal mergers more difficult

AUGUSTA (AP) — The Maine Legislature has sent the governor a bill requested by the mayors of Auburn and Lewiston to make it harder for municipalities to merge.

A key part of the proposal requires votes in each community considering a merger to gauge interest before starting work to implement the idea. Later, there would be a second vote.

The measure was adopted Tuesday.

Schools get grant from King’s foundation

PORTLAND (AP) — Stephen King’s foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Portland elementary schools.

The Portland Press Herald reports the Portland Education Foundation announced Tuesday that it will receive the grant from The Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation.

Brunswick Town Hall to address gun violence

In addition to a walkout and rally in which they’ve already taken part, students have organized a town hall Saturday that will be open to the public.

Legislature passes Bath bond fix

Bath may soon be able to fix its sidewalks and roads.

A technical issue that prevented the city from issuing a $2.8 million bond to fund the work, approved by voters last fall, has been remedied by a state Legislature bill. Now it will go to Gov. Paul LePage for his signature.

Brunswick man sentenced to over 2 years on firearms charge

PORTLAND — A Brunswick man was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for providing false information when trying to purchase a pistol.

Evan Lewis, 28, was sentenced to the prison time Tuesday in U.S. District Court, as well as three years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to the charge Oct. 26, 2017.
