Dont’a Hightower placed on IR

The New England Patriots have placed linebacker and defensive captain Dont’a Hightower on injured reserve.

The team announced the move Tuesday. Hightower left in the second half of New England’s win over Atlanta on Oct. 22 with a right shoulder injury.

Fire destroys historic Eastport building

EASTPORT (AP) — Authorities in Maine say a fire has destroyed a historic building that once served as a Navy barracks in World War II.

Crews responded to the fire at the Eastport building around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters contained the blaze after two hours.

Authorities say the fire destroyed most of the building, but no one was hurt.

Maine leads New England in drug takeback day collections

Authorities say New England turned in a record 48 tons of prescription drugs during the annual Drug Take-Back Day last month, with Maine leading the pack at over 41,500 pounds.

The Drug Enforcement Administration says when the program started in 2010, its New England Field Division collected a total of 25,810 pounds of unwanted drugs during the first national take-back day.

Cat long thought dead found alive 120 miles away

KENNEBUNKPORT (AP) — A cat missing for more than a year has been reunited with his owner 120 miles from their Maine home.

Kennebunkport resident George Lichte says he believed his cat, Romeo, was dead after he never came home one day last fall. The Bangor Daily News reports Lichte received a phone call two weeks ago from a Skowhegan veterinarian, saying Romeo was found alive.

The National Weather Service in Caribou says the first snowflakes of the year were observed in the Aroostook County city on Tuesday. The weather service says the snow fell in the afternoon.

Hunter charged in shooting death on first day of deer hunt

HEBRON (AP) — Police have charged a Maine hunter who fatally shot a woman with manslaughter.

Thirty-four-year-old Karen Wrentzel, of Hebron, died of a gunshot wound at the scene, where she was digging for gemstones on her property. The shooting happened on Oct. 28.

BELFAST (AP) — A Maine woman who told jurors that she drank multiple shots of liquor and smoked marijuana the night of her infant son’s death has been convicted of manslaughter.

Jurors returned the guilty verdict Tuesday evening, a day after 32-year-old Miranda Hopkins took the stand in her own defense in a courtroom in Belfast.
