Chowderheads don’t like meetings. When Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society (PPCS) meetings are required, members employ exceptional efforts to include recreation before reluctantly attending to business.
It is almost impossible to live in New England and not have some interaction with a rabid fan of the New England Patriots.

Members of several Maine and Florida Rotary Clubs have been traveling to the Dominican Republic for more than 16 years providing service and support to the island’s most needy. Partnering with Good Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, the Rotary 3-H team provides Hearing, Hands, and H20 (the third H) to impoverished Dominicans and Haitians.

TOPSHAM — Midcoast Youth Theater has announced auditions for its spring show, “Mary Poppins,” with Director Tammy Holmes and Music Director Courtney Babbidge. Auditions for this all age production are Saturday, Feb. 10 a.m. at Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church, 84 Main St., Topsham. All are welcome.
LISBON — The 25th annual World’s Greatest Sleigh Rides will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at 400 Main St., Lisbon Falls.
Durham is welcoming a new fire chief. Joseph Moore is starting in his new position March 1.
According to the town news release, Moore began his career as a volunteer EMT in his hometown of Union, Maine.
BRUNSWICK — Gelato Fiasco will open a year-round scoop shop in Orlando, Florida, this spring. The store will be Gelato Fiasco’s first permanent out- of- state year- round scoop shop. Gelato Fiasco was founded in Brunswick and makes gelato for sale at more than 5,000 grocers nationwide.
Trash from outside Brunswick may allow the town to close its landfill earlier than previous projections.
Brunswick Public Works Director John Foster said the landfill could close as soon as 2020 — beating earlier estimates by about a year — thanks to money generated by an influx of out-of-town commercial waste.
