Deer ice-surfs its way to safety

ALLAGASH (AP) — A video of a deer surfing an ice flow down river before nimbly jumping to safety is causing a sensation.

The young deer was shared widely on social media on Monday as it floated downriver and avoided an icy death near the tiny town of Allagash.

The Maine high school student who fled his native Zambia says the experience of participating in a national spoken poetry competition was “heaven” even though he didn’t advance.

Deering High School junior Allan Monga had to go to court to become one of 53 participants Tuesday in the national Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, D.C.

Democratic Secretary of State Matt Dunlap on Tuesday invalidated enough of financial planner Max Linn’s signatures to prevent Linn from appearing on the June Republican primary ballot.

Police: Man crashed car while overdosing on heroin

AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine police say they used naloxone to help revive a man who crashed his car into a utility pole while overdosing on heroin.

Police say 31-year-old Jess Legendre drove into a pole and then ended up in a ditch on Saturday in Manchester. Legendre became unresponsive shortly after the crash, prompting officers to use the overdose reversal medication.

Governor to allow road signs pointing out national monument
