Hunter charged in shooting death on first day of deer hunt

HEBRON (AP) — Police have charged a Maine hunter who fatally shot a woman with manslaughter.

Thirty-four-year-old Karen Wrentzel, of Hebron, died of a gunshot wound at the scene, where she was digging for gemstones on her property. The shooting happened on Oct. 28.

Mother convicted of manslaughter

BELFAST (AP) — A Maine woman who told jurors that she drank multiple shots of liquor and smoked marijuana the night of her infant son’s death has been convicted of manslaughter.

Jurors returned the guilty verdict Tuesday evening, a day after 32-year-old Miranda Hopkins took the stand in her own defense in a courtroom in Belfast.

Gloria S. Smith passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017 at a nursing home in Belfast, Maine at the age of 90.

She was born on July 15, 1927 to James and Columbia (Rossi) Sileo, and grew up in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, New York. Her father was a noted photographer and her mother a photo-journalist who covered Latin America. She was the eldest of three sisters.
