Bowdoin sailors in action today

BRUNSWICK — Four members of the Bowdoin College sailing team will compete at the 2017 Match Race National Championships, beginning today in Charleston, S.C.

It is the first time that the Polar Bears have qualified for the event, as the squad earned a trip thanks to a second-place finish at the New England Match Race Championship on the weekend of Oct. 14-15.

Junior midfield Julia Patterson and senior defender Nikki Wilson are both repeat All- NESCAC selections for Bowdoin.

BRUNSWICK — A trio of Bowdoin College field hockey players have been honored with All-NESCAC awards following the 2017 season.

Sophomore Kara Finnerty and junior Elizabeth Bennewitz were named First Team All-NESCAC, while senior Julian Fiore received Second Team All- NESCAC recognition.

The New England Patriots claimed tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers on Thursday, a day after he was cut by the Green Bay Packers for “failing to disclose a physical condition.”

He didn’t play in the Packers’ 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions after being listed as doubtful for the game.

Michael Paul Washburn passed away on Oct. 26, 2017.

He grew up in Brunswick and remained local throughout his life. He worked as a carpenter and a “wormer on the flats.” When he wasn’t working, you could find him fishing with his children, they were always by his side.

His sense of humor and smile will be greatly missed.

‘Magnum, P.I.’ actor dies at 84

John Hillerman, who played stuffed-shirt Higgins to Tom Selleck’s freewheeling detective Thomas Magnum in the 1980s TV series “Magnum, P.I.” has died, his nephew said Thursday. Hillerman was 84.

Hillerman, who had been in declining health, died Thursday of natural causes at his home in Houston, nephew Chris Tritico said.
