Man armed with crossbow arrested following standoff

CHESTERVILLE (AP) — Maine police say they arrested a man armed with a crossbow and high-powered pellet gun after a 10-hour standoff at a mobile home.

Maine State Police say that 41-year-old Vance Billings was charged with aggravated criminal trespass and mischief and violating bail conditions.

Sheriff’s deputy involved in rollover

LIMERICK (AP) — Authorities in Maine say a sheriff ’s deputy was involved in a rollover crash.

Police say the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Limerick. York County Sheriff Bill King says a deputy was responding to a domestic assault call when he flipped his cruiser.

The deputy was not injured in the crash.

State agencies agree to shift more funds to job training

AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine workforce boards are agreeing to spend a larger share of federal funds on job training following criticism from Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

The Portland Press Herald reports the state workforce board agreed Friday to set a goal of 45 percent of federal funds devoted to job training next year. That jumps to 60 percent in 2019.

Former priest pleads not guilty to new sexual abuse charges

A former Jesuit priest and Maine high school teacher has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually abused a 9-year-old boy at a Freeport church nearly 20 years ago.

The Portland Press Herald reports a court on Friday set bail at $50,000 for 80-year-old James Francis Talbot on Friday.

Harpswell sticks with recycling company

Casella will continue as contractor for Harpswell’s solid waste needs in 2018 after selectmen last week approved pursuing a pact with the company.

“We went out for bid a couple of months ago, actually,” said Recycling Center Manager Chuck Perow. “Our contract for waste disposal comes up at the end of this year.”

Fire department nets grant for new boat

BRUNSWICK

The Brunswick Fire Department will have a new tool in its arsenal come springtime.

The department was awarded a $30,000 grant in September to help purchase a new, 18-foot flat bottom boat with a jet outboard. The new vessel will help with search and rescue operations, as well as provide increased access to area islands and local waters.

Cundy’s Harbor holiday

As the light began to fade and a full moon peaked out from behind the horizon, Cundy’s Harbor residents gathered at Holbrook’s on Sunday for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Walk. Starting at Holbrook’s, dozens of people walked up to the community hall, lighting Christmas trees at various stops along the way.
