TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat seventh-grade girls basketball team lost its home opener to Oxford Hills, 42-33 in a fast-paced contest.

Oxford Hills 7th beats Mt. Ararat

SOUTH PARIS — The Oxford Hills seventh-grade boys basketball team defeated Mt. Ararat 65-48 recently.

Teigan Pelletier led Oxford Hills with 16 points, including a couple of 3- pointers. Lincoln Merrill chipped in 12 points, while Holden Shaw and Cole Pulkinen added eight and seven points, respectively.

Brunswick 8th girls down Tripp, 51-30

TURNER — The Brunswick eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated Tripp, 51-30 recently.

Leading the way for the Huskies were Kelsie Sullivan and Logan Brown, netting 10 points apiece, while Jaylee Sturgeon added nine.

Brunswick led 17-5 after one quarter and carried a 34- 16 into the half.

Mt. Ararat 8th girls win home opener

TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat eighth-grade girls basketball team won their home opener recently over Oxford Hills, 56-25 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles’ pressure defense and intensity to start the game was too much for the Vikings, as Mt. Ararat pumped out to an early 10-0 run and led 19-8 after the first quarter.

BATH — The Morse freshman girls basketball team dropped its season opener to Camden Hills, 50-37 recently.

Hannah Bailey led Morse with 14 points. Kaylee Garland contributed with solid defense in the loss.

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College seniors Kendall Schutzer and Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik have been named All-Americans by the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association.

Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik was a three-year starter for the Polar Bears.

In the NFL, a catch isn’t necessarily a catch, and a touchdown isn’t always a touchdown.

A runner can inch the nose of the football over the goal line and even if it’s subsequently batted away, it’s a touchdown.

Cue the celebration.

Rookie Jake DeBrusk set up second-period power-play goals by David Backes and fellow rookie Charlie McAvoy and added a goal of his own, Tuukka Rask stopped 16 shots to keep up his hot stretch, and the Bruins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-2 on Monday night.

Calm days bring gains on giant Southern California wildfire

Firefighters took advantage of calm winds in Southern California to reach 50 percent containment of a massive wildfire, officials said.

“We’ve had a very productive day,” said Deputy Chief Mark Brown of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protections. “The weather conditions were just right for us.”
