Over breakfast last week I was enjoying a grapefruit half when I had a flashback of my childhood days. Back then, Big Sis and I were forced by our obviously cruel parents to eat the occasional grapefruit half. We would, by way of defending our taste buds, douse each grapefruit serving with a pound of sugar. You can disguise almost anything with enough sugar.

Health group taking sleeping bags amid freezing Maine temps

BANGOR (AP) — A Maine health advocacy non-profit group is holding a blanket and sleeping bag drive as temperatures dip well below freezing in the state.

Healthy Equity Alliance began the drive on Jan. 16 and is continuing it until Feb. 1. It’s taking the items at its office on Pine Street in Bangor during normal business hours.

Court revives lawsuit against LePage

A federal appeals court on Friday revived a lawsuit accusing Republican Gov. Paul LePage of abuse of power and blackmail in a political feud that roiled the Statehouse and led to a failed attempt to impeach the governor.

The full 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston will hear arguments April 3 in the lawsuit brought by former Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves.

Police investigate fatal crash in Arundel

ARUNDEL (AP) — Police in Maine say a 45-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle head-on crash in Arundel.

Police say the crash killed Kerry Kiernan of Sanford. They say a preliminary investigation shows Kiernan was driving east on Route 111 when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck a vehicle operated by 22-year-old John Sanborn of Alfred.
