Maine unemployment fell again in December

AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s unemployment rate fell slightly again in December.

The Maine Department of Labor says the preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.0 percent in December was down 0.3 percentage points from November. It was also down from 3.8 percent a year ago.

Maine State Ferry Service eyes fare increases

AUGUSTA (AP) — The Maine State Ferry Service has proposed a set of fare increases in order to offset a projected budget shortfall.

The Portland Press Herald reports the largest increases would fall on non-residents with some trips increasing by $7. Under the new system, location-based ticketing would be eliminated as well.

Feds ask mariners to slow down to protect right whales

NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is announcing a voluntary speed restriction zone south of Nantucket to protect a group of rare whales.

The federal agency said Tuesday that the restriction for mariners will be in effect through Feb. 5 to protect a group of 22 North Atlantic right whales seen south of Nantucket on Tuesday.

2 fishermen plucked from icy water off Pembroke

PEMBROKE (AP) — The Coast Guard says the crew of a fishing boat rescued two fishermen whose scalloping boat began sinking near Pembroke, Maine.

Officials say the crew of the Alex Shea plucked the fishermen from the 39-degree water on Tuesday before they were transferred to a Coast Guard rescue boat.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland says 22-year-old Jonathan Limary made his first court appearance Monday. Limary faces manslaughter and aggravated assault charges stemming from the death of 44- year-old Caribou resident Jean Bragdon.
