Navy issues request for proposals for more destroyers

The Navy has submitted a request for proposals for more destroyers to be built by either Maine’s Bath Iron Works or Mississippi’s Ingalls shipyard, or both.

The Naval Sea Systems Command issued its final request on Thursday for Arleigh Burkeclass destroyers built with ballistic missile defense capability.

Woman dies in Freeport fire

A 68-year-old Freeport woman died in a fire early Saturday morning that destroyed a home at 35 Wardtown Road.

The fire was reported by 69-year-old David Madore, who woke to find his house filled with smoke. Freeport firefighters were called at 1:48 a.m.

New hires push proposed budget up in Topsham

An increase in employees is driving a proposed $300,000 increase in spending in Topsham.

Town Manager Rich Roedner recently presented his proposed budget to selectmen, calling for $11.8 million in total spending.

The town’s current budget has total spending at $11.5 million.

Polar plunge aids Oasis Free Clinics

The wind blowing off the ocean at Head Beach didn’t deter more than a dozen people from jumping into icy water on Saturday to benefit Oasis Free Clinics.

The air temperature was a balmy 37 degrees, but drew fewer people than the inaugural polar plunge last year, according to Oasis Executive Director Anita Ruff.
