When gun-control and gunrights advocates clash after the latest mass shooting, you can usually count on two rhetorical chips being thrown onto the table:

"What new law would have stopped the latest massacre?" gunrights advocates will ask.

That'll inevitably be followed up with the assertion that if we put limits on gun ownership, then only the bad guys will have guns.

8-year-old girl climbs from wrecked car to find help for mom

WESTFIELD (AP) — Maine State Police say an 8- year-old girl was able to climb out the back of a wrecked car and flag down help for her severely injured mother.

Police say the girl was in the back seat of a car driven by her 26-year-old mother on Tuesday night when the vehicle went off a road in Westfield and hit a tree.

Homeless man saved from fire

BANGOR (AP) — Fire officials in the Maine say a homeless man has been rescued from a burning abandoned home.

WMTW-TV reports crews responded to the fire at the Bangor home around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say they found a homeless man in the building who was disoriented and having difficulty breathing.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Survey: Heating oil prices up 9 percent since October

Topsham man, 40, suffers serious burns

Authorities are investigating an incident at a Topsham residence over the weekend that sent a man to a Portland hospital with severe burns and forced the evacuation of neighbors.

The fire department was called to the Barron’s Hill Apartments at 23 Winter St. at 2:39 p.m. Saturday.
