On Dec. 7, 1941, during a series of raids in the Pacific, Imperial Japan’s navy launched a pre-emptive attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing 2,400 people, about half of them on the battleship USS Arizona. (The United States declared war against Japan the next day.)

Good Samaritans pull woman trapped in burning car

NAPLES (AP) — Two good Samaritans pulled a Maine woman to safety after she became trapped in a burning car in a violent crash.

Twenty-five-year-old Alicia Szostak says she was driving in Naples when she jerked her steering wheel to avoid hitting a deer. The Bangor Daily News reports she crashed into two trees and the car was left on its side — where a fire began burning.

Maine high school band surprises bus driver battling cancer

PORTLAND (AP) — A beloved Maine school bus driver battling cancer received a heartwarming surprise this week.

The Portland Press Herald reports the South Portland High School marching band performed outside Mercy Hospital’s Fore River campus Wednesday to show support for Jamie Creamer. The 46-year-old bus driver is undergoing chemotherapy for neck cancer.

Contest aims to identify best-tasting tap water in Maine

BANGOR (AP) — Maine municipalities are battling for bragging rights when it comes to the best-tasting drinking water.

Maine Rural Water Association’s 31st annual Best Tasting Water contest is being held Thursday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Last year, first-time entrant Caribou Utilities District took the prize.

The Sun Journal reports Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant on Wednesday submitted a resignation letter to the Oxford County Commission and Gov. Paul LePage.

Police investigate barbershop stabbing

LEWISTON (AP) — Police have arrested a Maine man who they say stabbed another man inside a barbershop.

WCSH-TV reports the stabbing happened Wednesday night at the Major Cuts barbershop in Lewiston. Police say a 23-year-old Otisfield man stabbed 35-year-old Rashad Robinson, of South Paris.

Crash kills 16-year-old boy on way to school

MONTVILLE (AP) — Police say a 16-year-old high school student died in a car accident on his way to school in the Maine town of Montville.

Police say the crash killed Riley Boulay of Liberty, who was a student at Mount View High School in Thorndike. They say the single-car crash happened Wednesday morning and appears to have been caused by speeding.
