Filibuster Fades, Minority Rules

Last week, an American political institution, aged 100, was placed on its deathbed. Its expected passing was mostly overlooked and unlamented.

It was “filibuster,” the evil twin of the less well-known “cloture,” who survives. Cloture is a vote to end debate and allow a final vote on a bill in the U.S. Senate. It was born in 1917 to allow a vote on a World War I issue.

Every October Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, you’ll find Bath Sunrise Rotarians at two locations -- the Farmers Market at Waterfront Park and IGA on Front Street. Sales have been brisk the first two weeks. We sold so many allium bulbs we had to have more shipped in from the Netherlands.

Breakfast with Santa at Lisbon church

LISBON — Lisbon United Methodist Church, located at 14 School St. in Lisbon Falls, is sponsoring its 3rd annual Breakfast with Santa for local children and their families.

Families are invited to enjoy a free pancake breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Dec. 2 from 8-10 a.m. Children can have their picture taken with Santa as well.

Bath Middle School PUMPed for new bike track

Bath Middle School is now home to the state’s largest bicycle pump track.

“ It’s right in between BMS and the skate park. This is the largest indoor skatepark in the state of Maine, and that’s now the largest pump track in the state of Maine,” said BMS teacher Lawrence Kovacs.
