Library Teen Writing Contest Submission Deadline is Nov. 17

BATH — Nov. 17 is the deadline for submissions to Patten Free Library’s annual teen writing contest, “Write On!” Any student in grades 7-12 residing in the library service area or attending schools in RSU 1 may participate in the contest, and may submit up to two pieces of original work in the categories of short fiction and memoir.

Mainers set to vote on whether to expand Medicaid

PORTLAND (AP) — Voters in Maine are headed to the polls Tuesday to decide if they want to join 31 other states and expand Medicaid under former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

Craft fair returns to BHS

BRUNSWICK — Brunswick High School 24th Annual Juried Craft Fair sponsored by the BHS Boys Hockey Boosters will be held Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brunswick High School Gymnasium. The boosters say there will be more than 65 crafters in attendance at the Brunswick High School Gymnaisum.

Loss of power cripples food bank in Bath

Despite last-minute intervention from the Bath Fire Department, the Bath Area Food Bank said Monday that the continued power outage has resulted in further losses of frozen food.

“We lost a lot,” said Executive Director Kimberly Gates. “We lost all of our dairy, all of our eggs. We do have some frozen meats (and non-perishables).”

Nearly 200 households in Freeport remained without power on Monday, a week after the Oct. 30 storm that left 400,000 Mainers in the dark.

Neighborhoods that remain without power include the Wolfe’s Neck and Flying Point peninsulas, Church Road in South Freeport and Harraseeket Road.

Bates holds off Bowdoin for C-B-B

The strategy was simple. Bowdoin College junior quarterback Noah Nelson was going to throw, and throw often against Bates in a New England Small College football matchup Saturday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

For certain, Nelson did all that he could, completing 34- of-55 passes for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Middlebury men’s soccer team defeated Bowdoin, 1-0 in double overtime to advance to the New England Small College Athletic Conference finals on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (10-4-3) were the third seeded team heading into the semifinals, while the Panthers (12-5-0) had upset Amherst the previous weekend.

Patrick Cantlay wins PGA playoff in Las Vegas

Patrick Cantlay won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on Sunday in a playoff for the first victory in a PGA Tour career mostly derailed by a severe back injury.

The 25-year-old former UCLA star hit from behind a tree and got up-and-down for par from off the back of the 18th green to beat Alex Cejka and Whee Kim on the second extra hole.
