AUBURN — Gerard A. Tancrede, 64, a resident of Lisbon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice House in Auburn, Maine, following a brief illness.

“Gerry” was born in Lewiston, Maine, on May 17, 1953, the son of Arthur and Lorraine ( Lussier) Tancrede of Lewiston, Maine.

Surfer punches shark to escape

A novice surfer mastered a pro’s move on the first try: He punched a shark on the nose to escape its jaws.

The attack Monday afternoon off the Australian coast left Charlie Fry with superficial puncture wounds on his right shoulder and upper arm.

Sen. Collins calls on Senate candidate Moore to step aside

(AP) Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is joining Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in calling for Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama to step aside.

Collins tweeted Monday that she didn’t find Moore’s denials of sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl to be convincing, and she called on him to withdraw from the Senate race in Alabama.

Cold weather is good news for ski resorts

(AP) The cold weather that’s crept into Maine is good for ski resorts that are starting to open.

Sunday River opened last weekend and already is running seven days a week. Sugarloaf had enough snow to open last weekend, and it will reopen on Friday for the season.

The warm October set the resorts back.

Thirty-one-year-old Jason Wotton, of Lewiston, did not enter a plea to elevated aggravated assault Monday. Wotton is accused of beating 37-year-old Leon Hunt.

Short of goal, United Way encourages donations

At Thursday’s United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s Campaign Finale, Volunteer Chairman Bill Brillant said that while there were “hundreds of examples of tremendous generosity and caring,” the campaign overall did not reach goal was short of its $1.8 million goal.
