Maine scallopers back on water after record year in 2016

PORTLAND (AP) — Maine fishermen are heading out on the water to participate in the state’s rebuilt scallop fishery, which targets one of the most lucrative seafood species in the country.

Scallop fishing begins Friday in Maine and lasts until mid-April. The specifications for the season are very similar to the previous year.

Police: Maine woman threatened dog walker with BB gun

Franklin County deputies responded to a report of a gun being brandished Tuesday in the town of Eustis and arrested 65-year-old Marcia Higgins.

Suspect in mistaken identity killing back in Pennsylvania

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A man sentenced to life in prison for a West Virginia slaying is in Pennsylvania to face charges in an interstate killing that police say was a case of mistaken identity.

The Public Opinion reports John Wayne Strawser is accused of chasing down and killing 28-year-old Timothy Davison along Interstate 81 in January 2014.

Maine won’t participate in shrimp research program

PORTLAND (AP) — The commissioner of Maine’s Marine Resources Department says next year the state won’t participate in a research program that allows fishermen to catch some Northern shrimp.

Interstate regulators extended a moratorium on New England shrimp fishing for another year on Wednesday. They fishery has been shut since 2013.

Blaze destroys former fire chief’s garage

CASCO (AP) — Fire officials in Maine are investigating a blaze that destroyed a two-story garage.

WMTW-TV reports crews responded to the Casco home around 6 p.m. Thursday. Authorities say firefighters contained the blaze but the garage was a total loss.

Maine man behind bars, again, after exposure convictions

WARREN (AP) — A Maine man who’s been convicted of exposing himself more than a dozen times is in prison.

Prosecutors say 60-year-old Robert Demmons, of Warren, exposed himself in the parking lot of a Rockland store over the summer and faced three counts of indecent conduct.

Poets Society head gets tombstone

The founder of the Dead Poets Society of America is preparing for the day he'll become a dead poet himself — by getting a tombstone.

Walter Skold is drawing inspiration from his visits to the graves of more than 600 bards for his own tombstone to be carved by the son of novelist John Updike.

But in Kigutu, Burundi, water for the family has to be collected every day from Lake Tanganika or other streams and brought home over a five-mile walk in large old gasoline cans.
