Debt ceiling increase can’t be blocked

Congress won't ever block an increase in the debt ceiling. Threats to cap it are pure political grandstanding.

Congress spends money without raising enough tax revenues to cover spending. The shortfall must be met by borrowing. If the debt ceiling increase were blocked, borrowing would be prevented. The U.S. government wouldn’t have the funds needed to operate.

NASA waits for word that spacecraft met fiery end over Saturn

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.

NASA waited for confirmation Friday that the Cassini spacecraft had burned up in the sky over Saturn.

Cassini had been put on a course to plunge through Saturn’s atmosphere and vaporize like a meteor at the end of its 20-year journey exploring the planet.

Maine’s Sen. Collins: closing more military bases a bad idea

PORTLAND (AP) — Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says she opposes a proposed round of military base closures.

Collins is making the comments in the wake of a proposed amendment to the fiscal 2018 National Defense Authorization Act being considered by the Senate. She says the bases would be closed through a revised Base Realignment and Closure process beginning in 2021.

State urges Mainers to use free program to dispose of pesticides

AUGUSTA (AP) — The state is urging Mainers to dispose of unusable and waste pesticides that could instead end up in the trash.

The Maine environmental and agricultural departments are hosting the free annual program in October.

The agencies plan to collect the unwanted chemicals and take them to out-of-state disposal facilities to be incinerated or reprocessed.

Singing opportunities with Blanchard- Fleming Duo

WISCASSET — Conductor Linda Blanchard and pianist Sean Fleming, a married musical duo, have been collaborating in creating choral music in Midcoast Maine for more than 20 years, leading Sheepscot Valley Chorus, St. Cecilia Chamber Choir, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Choirs.

Both choirs and the chorus are looking for new singers.

Daytime burglaries plague Bowdoin

Sagadahoc Sheriff's Office wants help finding a suspect responsible for a rash of daytime burglaries reported Thursday.

The sheriff ’s office announced on Facebook the burglaries occurred between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Two burglaries occured on West Road, one on Wood Schoolhouse Road and one on Meadow Road. Jewelry and cash were stolen.
