Heating prices rise in Maine as fall weather nears

AUGUSTA (AP) — The Governor’s Energy Office says the price of heating oil is rising in Maine as fall nears.

The statewide average cash price for No. 2 heating oil was $2.19 per gallon this week. The office says that is 16 cents more than it was in late August.

Maine health officials address early flu cases

AUGUSTA (AP) — Early cases of the flu in Maine have prompted state officials to increase vaccination efforts.

The Banger Daily News reports multiple Maine hospitals have reported positive lab tests for influenza. Flu season usually begins in early October, but early cases of the illness have forced the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention to take action.

Cargo plane makes belly landing at Maine airport

PRESQUE ISLE (AP) — Officials say a plane carrying mail had to make an emergency landing in Maine, because its landing gear failed.

The twin-engine Wiggins Airways plane carrying mail for the U.S. Postal Service made the belly landing at the Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle. No one was seriously hurt.

Washington man sentenced for trafficking tusks

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Brinnon, Washington man was sentenced to six months in prison and fined $25,000 for trafficking ivory from protected species.

U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes says David L. Boone took part in an operation between 2006 and 2008 that smuggled narwhal tusks from Canada into the U.S.

Sheriff won’t honor ICE hold requests beyond release date

PORTLAND (AP) — The Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Department is the first in Maine to reject requests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hold prisoners in jail beyond their scheduled release.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce announced the decision in a Sept. 14 letter to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
