Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez had a severe case of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, researchers said on Thursday. His lawyer announced a lawsuit against the NFL and the team, accusing them of hiding the true dangers of the sport.

Lewiston man gets 5 years in prison in credit union robbery

PORTLAND (AP) — A federal court has sentenced a 33- year-old Lewiston, Maine, man to five years in prison for robbing a credit union this year.

U.S. District Judge Jon Levy sentenced Brent Roaix on Wednesday. Roaix pleaded guilty in May.

Sky banner message urges Collins to reject health care bill

UltraViolet Action commissioned a plane banner to fly over downtown Portland on Thursday. Collins is in Maine attending events held by home care and housing associations.

Laboratory files lawsuit over Chinese mouse breeding

BAR HARBOR (AP) — A Maine laboratory famous for breeding medical research mice claims it has a rat in its midst.

The Portland Press Herald reports Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor filed a federal lawsuit Sept. 18 alleging researchers at a Chinese University are breeding and selling strains of its mice.

Liliane Bettencourt, the L’Oreal cosmetics heiress and the world’s richest woman, has died at her home in a chic Parisian suburb. She was 94.

Bettencourt’s daughter, Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, said in a written statement Thursday that her mother “left peacefully” overnight in Neuilly-sur- Seine.
