Collins: Coverage of tax bill support ‘unbelievably sexist’

PORTLAND ( AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins is calling media coverage of her support for a tax overhaul “unbelievably sexist.”

The House on Tuesday afternoon approved a sweeping rewrite of the nation’s tax laws. The bill is headed to the Senate for an expected evening vote.

Woolwich’s town administrator resigns

WOOLWICH

Woolwich Town Administrator Suzette Cloutier resigned from her position earlier this month after nearly six months on the job.

“On Dec. 7, she turned in her resignation,” said Woolwich Selectman Jason Shaw.

He said Cloutier left “to pursue other career options,” but declined to elaborate further on the record.

Council OKs TIF for Cook’s Corner

The town of Brunswick is creating a new tax increment finance district in Cook’s Corner.

The town council approved the TIF — a tool to stimulate economic development — on Monday. The town will now apply to the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development to designate the TIF development program.

First baseman Mitch Moreland has agreed to a $13 million, two-year contract to return to the Boston Red Sox and play for former teammate Alex Cora.

“He’s a great baseball guy,” said Moreland, who was on the Texas Rangers when Cora made a brief appearance there in 2010. “He was a great teammate then, and I don’t expect anything different from him as a manager.”

KENNEBUNK — The Mt. Ararat High School boys jayvee basketball team fell behind 17-7 after one quarter and never recovered, losing to Kennebunk, 56-38 on Friday.

Ian Brady led all scorers with 20 points for the visitors. Jace Hollenbach and Roderick Minor chipped in with eight and six points, respectively in the loss.

Morse JV wins by three

BATH — Morse erased a one-point deficit after three quarters to slip past Westbrook, 33-30 in girls high school junior varsity basketball action recently.

Morse led 9-4 after one quarter and by four points at the half, 19-15, before Westbrook took the lead after three.

An 8-4 Morse advantage in the fourth sealed the victory for the Shipbuilders.
