U. S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis visited the American Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to offer holiday greetings to troops Thursday. It was the first trip there by a Pentagon chief in almost 16 years.

Car rams into pedestrians in Melbourne

SYDNEY

Australian police said there is no evidence of a terrorist link to a car ramming attack Thursday in central Melbourne that left 19 people injured.

Police said the driver was a 32-year-old Australian citizen of Afghan decent who has a known history of drug use and mental health issues. The man was known to police for historical minor assault and traffic offenses.

Investigators: Death of 2-year-old ruled a homicide

BUCKSPORT (AP) — Maine State Police say the death of a 2-year-old girl in October in her home in Bucksport has been ruled a homicide.

Lt. Troy Gardner said Kloe Hawksley was found unresponsive on Oct. 18 in a home she shared with another child and two adults. She was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the medical examiner’s office determined that her death was a homicide.

Police: Man shot by his own sister

NEWFIELD (AP) — A Maine man who police say was shot by his sister over a financial dispute has been upgraded to stable condition.

York County Sheriff William King Jr. says police responded to a Newfield home Monday morning for reports of a person shot. Officers found 29-year-old Joshua Gochie with one gunshot wound to his stomach.

Former Wells pastor pleads not guilty to senior exploitation charges

Report: Older Mainers exploited more by family members

BANGOR (AP) — A new report says older Mainers lost more money to exploitation by their family members than from scams.

The report released by Legal Services for the Elderly and Maine’s Office of Aging and Disability Services found that Maine seniors lost $28 million to financial exploitation between 2010 and 2016.

Joe Biden to make a stop in Portland on tour

Merrill Auditorium in Portland says the Delaware Democrat will appear on Jan. 31. He is in the midst of a tour called the “American Promise Tour” and is expected to talk about his political career.
